Daily Job Search: Bored?
Many times people take a long look at their job, and they realize their bored. This may not only be a sign of not being challenged by your work. It could be a sign that you’ve grown tired of your career. But I believe there is a DREAM JOB out there for everyone.
“Following in daddy’s footsteps” or being in a career because “you fell into it” no longer need to be the norm. Many people thing that work must be hard and arduous. Not true! Work can be fun, but really work must (MUST) be fulfilling. Employees work 40, 50, 60 hours per week - sometimes neglecting everything else for their work. Shouldn’t that be fulfilling and enjoyable? If it isn’t, then CHANGE!
Our friend, Jeff Johannigman of PeopleType Consulting (http://www.peopletype.com), talks about the “4 Basic Needs Your Career Fulfills”. Much like Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, these needs must be met to ensure you are happy in your career. According to Jeff, the 4 Basic Needs are:
- Physical - You job must keep you fed, clothed, a roof over your head, etc.
- Social/Emotional - Your job must be filled with people you like to be around.
- Intellectual - Your job must challenge you intellectually. Are you using your favorite skills?
- Spiritual - Not “the ministry” or “Green Peace”, but your job must be important. Your job must make a difference.
Many of us get into a job because it mets need #1 - Physical, and that is it. Pretty soon we realize we don’t like the people we work with. Then we get bored. Finally, we realize our job is meaningless and empty! Is that really the way life is supposed to be?!?! No! Most successful people start at need #4 - “Spiritual” - to find a job they love. That’s how to eradicate boredom! Identify those things/ideas/causes that you find important, and build your career from there.
