Taking The First Step
This past weekend, Jay & I created a free eBook called Taking The First Step because sometimes it’s hard to know what taking that first step might look like. The eBook (available by request through the free resources page on our website) covers some resources and crucial ideas to consider when taking the first step on your new career path. We go into more depth in the eBook and during the Find The Career You Love tele-coaching event, but here are a few foundational concepts to help you immediately:
- Figure out what you want: Go ahead. Indulge in pursuing your passion because you need enthusiasm to keep you going AND it’s a critical element in convincing the other party that you have what it takes.
- Figure out what you need: Get clear about your intangibles and tangible requirements. Oh so helpful in giving you a sense of control and of being grounded when you need it most.
- Figure out what you have: You have genius (some would call this your mission or purpose), talents, skills & value. If you don’t know what you bring to the table, how can you assume they’ll know what it is?
What will your first step be? Need some suggestions?
- Take an assessment
- Take a class
- Read a book (or several!)
- Attend a networking or learning event (like Career Connects)
- Journal out answers to questions - for some great ones, check out “20 Questions To Unlock Your Passions” by our friend, Jeff Johannigman (click on the Free Resources tab)
- Sign up for Find a Career You Love on February 3 (hint, hint!)
If you don’t design your own life plan, chances are you’ll fall into someone else’s plan. And guess what they have planned for you? Not much. –Jim Rohn
