DAILY JOB TIP: Half of Job Hunters Have No Idea When They'll Be Working Again
Last week Challenger, Gray & Christmas found through an independent study that 16% of would-be employees believe their hunts will take more than a year. More than half aren’t sure when they’ll find new positions., and half of job hunters have no idea when they’ll be working again!
Statistics show us that a job hunter who was making $50,000/year will generally take between 3-6 months to find a job. A good rule of thumb is for every $10,000 you make over that you should add a month to your search time. That’s a startling statistic! But, why does it take sooo long?
Typically the job search method most people employ is to hit the SUBMIT button on one or all of the large job boards. They spend 80%-100% of their time using this method. But, the success rate of big job boards is about 20%. The number of submits is generally in the thousands for most positions posted on CareerBuilder, Monster, or Hot Jobs. Why would candidates spend 100% of their time on a method that only works 20% of the time? !?!
A smarter way to search for a job is through a targeted job search:
- Identify companies you’d like to work for,
- Do your research, and
- Target that company — whether they are hiring or not.
This method is over 60% effective. Now that beats the 20% effectiveness, doesn’t it?
