Harold's Story
I read a story about Harold who owned a small-business teaching foreign languages. The economy had turned, and Harold was not bringing in the business that he needed. Bills were piling up. The stress was too much, and his marriage was suffering. His friends and family advised him to close the business, and get a 40 hour a week job. This crushed Harold. He LOVED what he did.
Here’s your $3,000,000!
Harold went to see a Career Coach to help him sort everything out. They played a “game” to help him get clear. “If you had $3 million in the bank, what would your life look like?”, she asked. Harold responded with, “I would still have my business!” His Career Coach challenged him by asking “what would you do differently with your business?”
Harold thought for a few moments, and quickly wrote down 10 things he’d do differently with his business. Some ideas would take lots of money, and some would not. By going through the list, Harold and his Coach were able to identify 5 action steps that didn’t cost anything. These included meeting with corporations to help them, and announcing a 4-week immersion foreign language class.
The Profits
Harold was able to shift from negative to positive. He was able to implement an actionable plan. Two years later he would say that the sessions with his Coach had turned his life around. His business is thriving, and he’s happily married.
The Game
What would you do if you had $3,000,000 in a bank account, but the only way to get to it was to work 40 hours per week doing something you loved. What would it be? Got an idea? What’s keeping you from getting there? Can you find one action step that can begin to move you toward a career or business you love.
