Do You Want To Do This, or Don’t You?
Twyla Tharp went to New York City with big dreams. This Indiana farm girl’s real passion was dance. She auditioned for commercials and tried out for roles — but she just didn’t seem to fit in anywhere. She lacked the technical skills to be a ballerina, and she discovered in another audition that she was too short for the Rockettes. Tharp wondered if she would ever be a dancer, but it was her passion.
Do You Want To Do This, or Don’t You?
She formed her own dance troupe, and for five years Tharp and her troupe practiced. They worked for little pay and no recognition. Tharp said she would constantly ask herself, “Do you want to do this, or don’t you?”
Now over forty years later, she has choreographed over 100 dances on Broadway and in movies like Hair and Ragtime. She’s won the National Medal of the Arts. And, still Tharp continually asks herself that question - “do you want to do this, or don’t you?”
What Were Your Dreams?
Twyla Tharp found a way to use her passion for dance in a non-traditional method. She dreamed of dance, and she lived it. Maybe in an unexpected way. Her dreams and passions were fulfilled. Twyla Tharp lived her dream.
What was your dream? Was it to orbit the Earth? Cure cancer? Help the needy?
well….”Do you want to do this, or don’t you?”
