Turn those “buts” into “ands”

“But the job pays less…”

John’s role as a department director for a prominent bank had been eliminated due to a merger. He’d been offered an assistant directorship with a nonprofit, which supported a cause very near and dear to his heart. But he was conflicted about it. “If it was just me, I’d take it in a heartbeat. But the job pays less than my job with the bank. I’d be happy to eliminate a lot of the extras from my life, but it wouldn’t be fair to put my wife through that.”

Turning “buts” into “ands”

I challenged John to figure out how he could make this work. What alternative income sources that he could bring in to supplement his paycheck as assistant director at the nonprofit? Here’s what he came up with:

  • “We’re fixing up that extra home we own and will rent it for monthly income.”
  • and “My wife created an art curriculum a while back – she’s going to sell it online.”
  • and “I will get my certifications to do home inspections. A couple of hours per inspection, it can be done in the evenings and on weekends, and my friend has steady work for me.”

and he took the dream job with the nonprofit.

Dive into the sea of thought, and find there pearls beyond the price. –Anonymous
