Job Despair/A New Beginning
In the movie Up In The Air, Ryan Bingham uses a line when he terminates people: “Anybody who ever built an empire, or changed the world, sat where you are now. And it’s because they sat there that they were able to do it.” Still the loss of a job is wrought with despair.
Despair
When I work with clients who have just lost their job, I always recommend they take a week off to decompress. It might even be a good idea to get out of town. Don’t look for a job. Don’t update your resume. It will be impossible to forget about the job situation, but stepping away from job search will help immensly in the long run.
Relief
Many people experience despair while they are in the job — before job loss. When their job finally ends, they actually find a level of relief. Many report that it was the “best thing that ever happened to them”. It shouldn’t be too surprising if you read the report earlier this year that 55% of Americans are unhappy in their job.
A New Beginning
Statistically, you will find another job. But maybe it is time for a new beginning. It could be the beginning of a new job. It could be the beginning of a whole new career or a new business. Instead of focusing on the despair, focus on the new beginning!
