Undercover Boss

I really like this new show “Undercover Boss” on CBS. If you have not seen the show “Undercover Boss”, it is a show where the CEO of the company goes undercover to work entry-level positions within his or her company. The show is a wonderful concept, and very eye-opening for the boss. The boss learns from the employees how to do the job, but the real power of this show is how the boss gets to know the employees and their stories.

One thing a good boss will do is to get to know his or her employees. However, many of the managers and supervisors today don’t take the time to do that. When an employee is “a number”, it stifles their motivation?

How do you ensure you aren’t just another number when you are looking for a new job?
During the interview ask questions about the manager’s style. For example:

  • “How do you coach and encourage your staff?”
  • “How do you motivate your staff?”
  • “How do you get to know your staff on a personal level?”

Asking these types of questions to the hiring manager may help you determine how the manager feels about his/her staff. It also can help you determine if you are interviewing with a company where you may become just another number.
