find the work YOU LOVE!

Live It Forward

This week I am VERY excited about the upcoming guest, Mr. Kent Julian. Besides being an AMAZING man, Kent was my personal Career Coach.

I found out about Kent through …. well, let me start at the beginning.
I was working in Information Technology. I was on-call 24/7 for some systems I supported. I was living in the Pacific-Northwest with my family, and I was getting pretty sick of a meaningless job…and pretty sick of being on-call. I didn’t “hate” my job, but I sure didn’t “like” my job (let alone LOVE my job!). I knew work had to be better than this. I remember someone telling me “it wouldn’t be called ‘work’ if it were fun!” So I just continued on. I was a mediocre employee, and knew that any day they were going to get sick of my apathy.

This wasn’t my first job that I couldn’t stand.
In fact, it was about my 10th job — after college — that I couldn’t stand! What was the common denominator? ME! It wasn’t that the jobs were bad. In fact, when I look back, they really weren’t. It was that I was a square peg trying to fit my life into a round hole because I didn’t know any better.

At the time I was a big fan of Dave Ramsey - the internationally known Financial Peace University creator. I listened to his radio show from time-to-time, and one of the advertisers was the author of ”48 Days to the Work You Love”, Dan Miller. Dan’s ads always talked about “work you love”, so I sent him an email. Dan - being a best selling author - is a hard man to contact, but he had a vast network of partner coaches. Kent Julian was one of those Coaches!

I didn’t need no stinkin’ Career Coach
I was a hard sell for Kent. It took Kent 3 calls to get me to commit to coaching. I was in HR and IT, for goodness sakes. I knew how to get a job - I had gotten 10 or 12 of them by now. I had taken the Strong Interest Inventory, so I thought I knew all my options. What was Kent going to tell me that I didn’t already know?!?

Eventually, Kent convinced me that anyone in a mediocre career can benefit from a coach. I spent 4 tele-sessions with him going through my Career Profile (DISC Assessment), worked on my Goals in all 7 areas of my life, and created a Plan to help me find work that was able to give me the freedom and autonomy that I needed.

It changed my life
What you are reading now, what you hear on every 1st & 3rd Saturdays on our Show, the speaking events, the programs and 2×1 Coaching which Angela & I do…these are all by-products of my work and journey with Kent! I am more satisfied, fulfilled, and happier now than I ever have been!

I am honored to have Kent on our BlogTalkRadio Show this Saturday from 10am-10:30am (central). We will be asking Kent about what his process is now, how we can recognize a bad career, and how we can achieve greatness. You won’t want to miss this show, and we want you to help us with questions for Kent. If you’d be willing to submit your own career question (you can comment on this blog post or simply send us an email to [email protected]), we will ask Kent to answer them on Saturday morning.

See you Saturday!
