Why use a coach?
I bet job searching is not necessarily one of your natural, inborn gifts. You’re probably not exactly trained for the process either. Although the skills involved are probably much easier than the job you ARE trained to do for a living, these are skills you won’t have in abundance unless you’re a professional job seeker.
Job searching isn’t rocket science, but it is a science, nevertheless, especially considering all the objectivity, psychology and business finesse that’s involved. Some also say it’s an art. When looking at the marketing and writing know-how you need as well, I would agree.
After spending more than 19 years in the career services field, I’ve got an advantage – I AM trained in the job searching process. I AM fluent in the science and the art of it. Most importantly, I challenge myself to keep up with the changes, such as in resumes, technologies and networking methods. There are some foundational basics, of course, and then there are the interesting building blocks that need to be used and shifted around according to each person’s individual strategy. I make it my business to know what those are, and I truly enjoy supporting and teaching others in the process.
Why use a coach?
Can you imagine the world of athletics without coaches? Whether you are playing for a few years in little league or working as a professional athlete, aren’t you glad to have coach who knows the game inside and out, has a passion for the sport and can help you know exactly what it takes for you to be successful?
A coach can be objective about you. A coach observes your potential, listens to what you say and analyzes the data to give you a better picture of what your true gifts are and where and how they’re best applied. A coach helps you find what is there right under your nose – because that’s his or her job.
I read recently that Lebron James wanted to play football when he was young. It was a coach who spotted his basketball potential and helped him develop so he could become the NBA superstar he is today.
The stats say that obtaining career support services gets you where you want to be 20% faster. So, aren’t you glad that there are coaches like Jay and me who WANT to be skilled at this job search stuff?
Since it takes a whole different set of skills to find and land a job you love than it takes to DO a job you love, using the services of a skilled coach makes great sense.
