Who Is In Your Inner Circle?
Have you ever had someone in your life that could tell you all the reasons why you cannot do something? Joel Osteen, the Pastor of Lakeway Church in Houston, says you should surround yourself with an inner circle of friends who can celebrate you and help you become who you are meant to be. This may mean you need to change the people you eat lunch with at the office. Maybe you have a neighbor that always brings you down, or a friend who tries to pull you back down when you find some success. It may be time to shed those people, and surround yourself with a good network of friends who can help you achieve your goals.
I’m proud that my inner circle is full of people who are putting good energy into me. A group that has helped me immensly is the Austin Project Managers Institute (Austin PMI). This group of people are filled with great energy and determination to accelerate their profession. They use this time to network - not only to find a job, but to share experiences and challenges they are facing.
However, if you are looking for a job the Austin PMI chapter has a great concept. The “Blue dot/Green dot” program. If you are unemployed looking for work, you wear one color dot. If you are an employer with a job to offer, you wear the other dot. The blues and the greens meet over the course of the evening, and a connection is made.
Besides the job opportunities and great information at these events, networking with people in your field allows you to build a solid inner circle. And, as Joel Osteen says: “You cannot soar with the eagles when you are hanging out with the turkeys.”
Jay will be speaking at the Austin PMI meeting tonight from 7:00pm-9:00pm at the University of Texas. If you are in the area, consider stopping by!
