4 Ways to Enhance Your Resume

by Jay Markunas, Career Consultant

Yesterday I talked about terms you shouldn’t use on your resume. I mentioned that we had talked about “what’s in”/”what’s out” on resume. Here are a few what’s in:

  • Professional Summary - Instead of putting in an Objective which reads something like “Looking for a position where my skills & talents can be most used…” <blah> <blah> <blah>, put in a summary of your qualifications and major accomplishments.
  • Years - Instead of putting in the months on your employment dates, put in the years only.
    Example:
    XYZ Corp 2007 - Present
    Senior Web Developer
    ZYX Corp 2004 - 2007
    Web Analyst
  • Accomplishments - As mentioned yesterday, the resume needs to be accomplishments-based. “Responsible for….” doesn’t tell the hiring manager how you helped your previous employer.
  • Volunteer Activities - Relevant volunteer activities can really enhance your resume. Those activities can show you have other interests that compliment your regular work activities.

Making these changes to your resume can really enhance your resume, and make your resume stand out above the other candidates.
