Email Oblivion

by Jay Markunas, Career Coach

This week we were honored to have Doug Whatley on The Show. Doug gave us some great advice about how to network, use social media, and a great tip on how to avoid email oblivion.

How To Avoid E-mail Oblivion?
It’s a very simple yet effective tip. The best way to get your email noticed (and not caught in the fray) is to CC people in your email. When you see yourself CC-ed in an email, according to Doug you will experience two two emotions: Glee and Terror!

The first emotion, glee, is “who’s complaining about whom? I want to see it!” Quickly that turns in to the second emotion, terror, in the thoughts of ”Is it me?!?“. We naturally want to see the train wreck as long as we avoid riding on the train. When you CC people on your resume, the same is true.

CC The Hiring Manager
How do you get noticed? When you send in your resume, copy the person/people who have the power to hire you. Of course, you’ll need to do your research to find this person/people within the company. However, when you follow the proper submitting procedures as well as copy the hiring manager your chances of getting noticed go up significantly!
