Creative Ways To Quit Your Job

by Jay Markunas, Career Coach

The world is fascinated by people quitting their job. Maybe it is the fantasy of one day walking into the boss’ office, and saying “Take This Job And Shove It!” Fantasy or not it is always advisable to have a job before you quit a job, and give a two-week notice so you do not burn any bridges. You never know when your paths might cross again. Nevertheless, watching those with the courage to quit in a humorous or creative way is downright inspiring.

You probably recall last week a Jet Blue flight attendant, Steven Slater, became fed up and quit. Slater had gotten into an altercation with a passenger as they were taxiing to the gate. The passenger had gotten up to get his bag while the plane was still moving. Slater got up to ask him to sit down, and the passenger and he had words (and allegedly hit him). Slater got on the intercom, and said “To the passenger who just called me an < expletive >, < expletive > you! I’ve been in this business for 28 years, and I’ve had it!” He then grabbed a beer, opened the exit door, deployed the safety raft, went to his car and went home. The police arrested him later on a number of charges. Sometimes a person has taken enough abuse and disrespect. They lose their cool, and quit their job.

In another story, Twitter blew up last week over a young lady who quit her job by sending a number of photos to her colleagues and boss after overhearing her boss caller her an offensive name. She exposed the bosses internet usage - over 19 hours a week playing Farmville on Facebook! The story was later found out to be a hoax, and the woman who quit was an actress hired by a website to create a viral video. It worked….really well. It even was mentioned on a few of the late night talk shows.

Not verified, but not appearing to be a hoax, is the 2001: A Space Odyssey quitter. He wrote “I QUIT!” on his chest and stomach, played a CD of 2001: A Space Odyssey music, marched into the lunch room, and ripped his shirt open to announce that he quit.

I’ve searched YouTube for humorous and creative ways people quit, but there really are only a few videos of people quitting. If you have a funny story or video of someone quitting, let us know in our comments section.
