Social Recruiting

by Jay Markunas, Career Coach/Consultant

Today at lunch I am honored to be speaking to the Texas Recruiters Association. I’ll be speaking on social media and “social recruiting”. We had a great video about the Social Media Effect, and how social media is changing the way we interact.

Social Media On Job Search
When we are looking for a job, 20 years ago we would look in the newspapers. Between 1995 and 1999, a number of sites launched that would change the way we search for employment. CareerBuilder was launched in 1995, and Monster.com was launched in 1999. Now, when we begin to look for a job we don’t reach for the newspaper, we reach for the keyboard + mouse.

But social media has us changing the way we use that keyboard + mouse to find work. Instead of searching and applying for a job through the traditional job board, many are now using sites such as LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter to find open positions, research companies, and make a connection within the company.

Usage
In fact, CareerBuilder.com has seen a decrease from 24M unique visitors per month in 2007 to 13.5M visitors in 2010. Monster had over 13.5M visitors per day in 2008, but now has 10.5M visitors. Sites like LinkedIn, Twitter, and FaceBook have seen their usage increase significantly over time because these sites have become one-stop-shops. Personally, my Facebook page has job listing in my profile. My LinkedIn has job postings, company information, and the ability to connect with me. The convenience of job postings, research, and connection opportunities - without leaving the social media site - are the main reason theses sites are seeing such an increase. You are going to find your job search is much more efficient when you embrace and leverage social media.
