Google Alert
We spoke to Charla about being mindful to the content you put on the internet. A great suggestion is to setup a Google Alert on your name to understand what is out there on the internet about you. This will not only keep you updated about what is being posted about you. It will also allow you to know what recruiters and hiring managers will find when they search the internet for your name.
Workforce Readiness
We also asked Charla about one of her passions - helping students become workforce ready. What skills are necessary to succeed in the 21st Century’s workforce? Do high school students and college graduates really have those skills? According to Are They Really Ready To Work?, a report by The Conference Board, ”Young people need a range of skills, both basic academic skills as well as the ability to apply these skills and knowledge in the workplace…far too many young people are inadequately prepared to be successful in the workplace.” Teaching our children about how to be successful in the workplace is crucial.
Testing
Charla, who recommended the site TBEC {Texas Business & Education Coalition}, told our listeners that her 5th grader took an aptitude test. The test - based on likes and dislikes - showed that her son scored high toward engineering and science. It may sound absurd to test a child that young, but the results actually helped him focus on his strengths. Charla says that he became very focused on math & science which will help him later on.
