Career Wizard

by Jay Markunas, Career Consultant & Host of the Job Search Boot Camp Show

Are you a “career wizard”? Our guest on Saturday morning is. Deanne Arnath is the President & CEO of Career Wizards. She joined us on the latest episode of The Job Search Boot Camp Show. We asked Deanne a bunch of great questions on job search, career, and about her online tool to help accelerate the job search. I invite you to listen to the replay via iTunes or streaming audio.

RESUMES
Deanne is a Certified Professional Resume Writer. So, of course, we asked her about resumes. Many seekers believe that it is the only thing necessary to get a job. While a resume is important, Angela always says “you can get a job without a good resume, but you can’t get a job without a good job search strategy.” Regardless, the resume is necessary (good or bad). We asked Deanne about what makes a good resume. ”Verifiable accomplishments!” That makes a good resume.

Generally, we write our resume as a “responsibilities-based” document. You know, “responsible for….”? For example, “Responsible for programming and updating the finance system”. BORING!!!! What did that statement do to really help the company’s bottom line? How about “Streamlined the old order process cycle by enhancing the finance system allowing credit cards to be processed 35% faster.” Now THAT is an accomplishment!

JOB SEARCH
However, a resume is a vehicle to get a job. The strategy is really the important piece. How do you create a job strategy that works? According to Deanne (and most career experts):

1. Send in your resume to targeted companies that you WANT to work for.
2. Follow-up with a phone call to ensure the company received your resume.
3. Network-Network-Network!

Finding a job takes work. We know the pain and anguish over not being employed. Quite frankly, it sucks. When we have a job we hate working. When we don’t have a job, we can’t wait to work. Finding that balance of doing “something you love” for a “company you respect” is the recipe for work you love. Whether you are looking for work or looking for work you love, make sure you are taking the steps to find that Great Occupation!
