DAILY JOB TIP: 3 Things To Do When Your Job Ends
Yesterday I discussed Golden Parachutes for upper management. Today, I will talk about employee termination for the average employee.
22 states - like Texas - are “Right To Work” states. This is a law entitled under the Taft-Hartley Act which prohibited agreements between trade unions. These law entitles all companies and employees to leave a position at any time for any reason. For this reason, litigation in these states against a unlawful termination are fairly low.
To protect employees and the economy of communities, Congress passed The WARN Act - Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act - which requires most employers with 100 or more employees to provide sixty calendar-day advance notification of plant closings and mass layoffs of employees. Although there are many exceptions, most large companies must abide by this law, and will pay the terminated employee for 60 days of pay on their termination.
3 Things To-Do When Your Job Ends:
The job of finding a job is the most primary purpose. Whether a severance is paid or not, consider these three things.
1) Resist the urge to take “a few weeks off”. Give yourself 3 business days to relax and recharge. Taking longer could false-start your search.
2) If you make $50,000/year, it will generally take 12-20 weeks to find your next job. If you make more, count on an additional 1 week for every $10,000 over $50,000 (for example, if you make $100,000/year, it will take you average between 17-25 weeks to find your next job). Invest some of your severance in the appropriate help to reduce the time you are looking for work. Hire a Career Coach, Resume Writer, or Career Counselor. They will help you reduce the time that you are unemployed potenitally saving you weeks of time without pay.
3) Network and Volunteer. Let your network know you are looking for new opportunities. We know that 80% of job seekers found their last job through networking. Volunteering is not only a great way to help, but it also lets you build your network!
Get started early, and keep moving forward. Create a good resume, and have a good strategy. Read my post tomorrow on having a good resume and a good job search strategy.
