How to Deal With an Extended Job Search

Last week I wrote an article for Ezine on how to deal with an extended job search. I was fortunate to listen in on a panel of Psychologists and Counselors who help people through an extended job search. You can read the full article at: http://EzineArticles.com/?id=3652681.

Career Change
In the article I talked about not discounting the idea of a career change. One story was of an IT professional in his 50′s that had been laid off. He started exploring careers, and through a career assessments he scored “off the charts” for Aircraft Mechanic. After a few years, he reported that he had to pinch himself each day when he walked into the hanger at his job as an Aircraft Mechanic!

Find your passion
There are many assessments out there that will help - like The DISC w/Career Match, Strong, and Campbell. Personally, we use the DISC with Career Match in our Find a Career You Love tele-class (BTW: the next class is coming up on Wednesday!). No one assessment will “tell you what to do”, but it will give you a great starting point. In our tele-class, we talk about what to do with that information, and give an additional tool - the CareerFinder Method(TM) worksheet - which helps pinpoints potential careers.

Wouldn’t it be nice to LOVE Mondays?!?
Dan Miller the author of 48 Days To The Work You Love, wrote another popular book called No More Mondays. In his books he always talks about the feeling of loving your work. That sounds incongruent with what we’ve learned all of our lives. Our parents complained about their jobs, and our friends complain about their jobs. What gives us the right to love our job?!?! Well, you have the right. No…you have the RESPONSIBILITY to love what you do. As Confucius said over 2,000 years ago - “Find a career you love, and you’ll never work a day in your life!” It’s over 2,000 years later. Are you in a career you love, or are you in a job you hate?
