Making A Career Change & Sticking It Out
by Jay Markunas, Show Host
On this week’s show we were joined by Dr. David Litton. David is a licensed Psychologist and consultant with expertise in career and executive counseling, change management, psychotherapy, EAP counseling, and critical incident debriefing.
David’s own journey began when he majored in Comparative Religion which (according to David) prepared him to be a Bartender. David eventually become the bar Manager, and into Restaurant Management. In his mid-30′s - after being burnt out - David hired his own Career Coach. Through their work, all signs pointed towards healthcare and Psychology. He struggled with the 6+ years it would take to become a licensed Psychologist, and he discussed this with his Career Coach. His Coach told him that 6 years will come and go no matter what. At the end of 6 years does he want to be in a career he loves, or did he want to be “flipping burgers”.
On our show David shared with us his thoughts on career assessments like the Campbell Interest & Skills Survey, the Birkman, and Edgar Schein’s Career Anchors. He also shared with us groundbreaking work like Martin Seligman’s Positive Psychology.
Assessments and attitudes change over time, so you may see different results in your 40′s/50′s than you did in your 20′s & 30′s. So take the assessments again as things change.
David’s insight and infectious style can be heard on our show. You can listen to the replay below:
