This past week, a client who’s been downsized due to the economic conditions of the recent recession asked me about whether she should go back into her field and take a job offer from an old boss (who’s moved to a new company). Problem is she’s trying to move into a new field, preferably government. However, she’s a single mom and feels she can’t afford to say no.
What do you think? Should she take the job and just not divulge her plans with this person?
Personally, I would love to see her be able to honestly say to her old boss that she’s trying to make a career change into the government sector. I would love it if the boss said yes – that she could work there until the probably long & drawn out government hiring process concludes.
I don’t know, maybe she could do this. Maybe she could work out a short-term employment arrangement. Maybe she could do the job for 60 days and then reassess whether the job needs to be made into a long-term situation. Maybe the manager’s familiarity with her work ethic and skills is motivation enough to hire her as long as possible… even if means losing her in a couple of months.
But… that’s a heck of a lot of maybes. What would you do?
