Pre-Employment Tests
The 2010 NFL draft just wrapped up this weekend. Before the draft, the athletes attend The NFL Scouting Combine to test the player’s athletic ability. In addition to the athletic test, the NFL also uses a common exam as a pre-draft assessment.
Pre-Employment Pre-employment tests are fairly common as a condition of employment. Some of these tests require no studying - like a pre-employment drug or personality test. Some require months or years of study - like a foreign language exam or the BAR exam for lawyers.
Some Interesting Applications Like many organizations, the NFL use the Wonderlic Personnel Test. The Wonderlic is a 12 minute/50 question test to assess math and problem solving skills. While the average score is 24, a score of 10 or more is considered “literate”.
The average Wonderlic score of other professions:
- Chemist – 32
- Programmer – 29
- Journalist – 26
- Sales – 24
- Bank teller – 22
- Clerical worker – 21
- Security guard – 17
- Warehouse – 15
If conducted properly, pre-employment testing can be quite useful. However, the experts say the best application of these tests are to examine workplace behaviors - integrity, dependability, service, productivity and safety.
